When do we talk about dental anxiety?

Hardly anyone looks forward to a cavity or root canal treatment with excessive joy. Feeling uneasy and having some butterflies in the stomach before an appointment, however, is not comparable to a true dental phobia. Dental anxiety usually leads patients to avoid visiting the dentist for many years, ultimately exacerbating the situation.

Often, anxious patients in the dental office also feel ashamed to openly express their fears, as fear is still a taboo subject in our society. Additionally, dental anxiety triggers many self-doubts among sufferers. While friends and acquaintances perceive dental appointments as something routine, the mere thought of a dentist causes physical symptoms for them. We specialize in treating anxious patients in our dental practice in Berlin Friedrichshain and Berlin Lichtenberg, offering various treatment methods for dental anxiety.

What options are available to overcome dental anxiety?

If you suffer from dental anxiety, the first step is to realize that you are not alone in this problem. Dental anxiety is primarily the fear of pain and the loss of control while in the dentist's chair. Once a person has had a bad experience - no matter how far back in time it may be, they tend to associate visits to the dental office with that painful experience. However, to prevent your dental health from suffering permanently, there are various ways to address dental anxiety.

Relaxation techniques

For mild to moderate dental anxiety, simple relaxation techniques can already help you approach your next visit with a bit more calmness.

Sedation

Upon request, we can offer our anxious patients light sedation. They remain awake and fully conscious during the treatment; however, the administered sedatives have anxiety-reducing and relaxing effects. The significant advantage of light sedation is that patients can respond to the dentist's instructions and maintain control over their muscles. When combined with a local anesthetic, a completely pain-free treatment is possible.

General anesthesia

For severe dental anxiety or complex procedures, general anesthesia is also an option. This involves the deepest form of sedation, where the patient's consciousness and pain perception are completely suppressed. For brief examinations lasting no longer than fifteen minutes, short-term anesthesia is also possible.
